For any aspiring writers out there, would you please share a short bit of writing advice?
Before I wrote my first novel twenty years ago, I wrote outlines of three books in the genre I hoped to write in — summarizing each chapter in about a page — and then spent months reading over and absorbing those outlines before attempting my own. It’s still the teach-yourself method I always recommend, because I think it allows you to pick apart another story, understand what makes it work, and absorb the rhythm of a well-plotted novel.
What is the last book you raved about and what did you love about it?
Kristy Woodson Harvey’s Beach House Rules. For real. It just came out three weeks ago, and I know I’m biased because she’s one of my best friends, but you guys, this book is AMAZING. It’s about friendship and family (and maybe more importantly, the friends who turn into family) and about how to define yourself by what’s in your heart rather than by what everyone else is saying about you. It’s the absolute perfect beach read, so if you’re going to the beach (or the pool) this summer, do yourself a favor and grab this beauty immediately.
What can you tell us about your work-in-progress?
