A Conversation with Emilia Hart

A writing tip, book recommendation, and other great insights from Emilia that were not covered in our on-air interview, which you can WATCH or LISTEN to now!

For any aspiring writers out there, would you please share a short bit of writing advice?
What works for me when writing a first draft is to set a daily word count — normally about 1000 words. Sometimes this takes me one hour, sometimes five! Of course a daily word count won’t be achievable for everyone — we all have lots of constraints on our time. So I’d say, try to spend a little bit of time each day in the world of your story, whether that’s writing one paragraph or perhaps daydreaming about a scene. It all adds up in the end!

What is the last book you raved about and what did you love about it?
The last book I loved was The Wedding People by Alison Espach. When I’m writing I prefer to read outside my genre and I absolutely devoured this darkly funny literary comedy about weddings, marriage, life and death. It centers on Phoebe, an unhappy woman who arrives at a Rhode Island hotel to find that she’s the only guest not partaking in Lila and Gary’s nuptials. Against her will, she becomes swept up in Lila’s determination to hold the perfect ‘wedding week’. The characterisation and dialogue is absolutely spot on, Phoebe felt so real to me. And the ending was perfect.

What can you tell us about your work-in-progress?
