A Conversation with Julie Clark

A writing tip, book recommendation, and other great insights from Julie that were not covered in our on-air interview, which you can WATCH or LISTEN to now!

For any aspiring writers out there, would you please share a short bit of writing advice?
The best advice I can give to aspiring writers is to read a lot. Not just the really great books, but the not-so-great ones as well. One of the things I do when I’m reading a book that isn’t a fit for me is think about what I would do to change it if I were the one writing it. It’s a great exercise on revision and editing (which you will spend most of your writing career doing)!

What is the last book you raved about and what did you love about it?
I absolutely LOVE books that force me to make an ethical decision — and if it’s slightly speculative, all the better! I loved Nikki Erlik’s The Measure (not sure if I would look at my string...I’m still trying to decide), LOVED The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard (I’m still thinking about what 20-years-ago Julie and 20-years-from-now Julie might be doing and I like the idea that they’re out there somewhere existing), and John Marrs’s The One (I definitely think I’d try to find my DNA Match).

What can you tell us about your work-in-progress?
